Well Drilling Ahead of Schedule in Beracah

Beracah, Zambia—Every year, at least 7,830 Zambians—most of them children—die because they do not have clean water. Thankfully, this is something that is easily preventable with the installation of water wells and filters. Since January, Bright Hope’s partner in Zambia has been working with a drilling team in Beracah to drill 10 wells, contributing to the health of their community.

Samfya, Zambia – Mark Brubacher, Bright Hope Partnership Developer for Zambia, spoke at the South African Orphan Summit in June on effective orphan care. The conference set out to educate organizations, churches, and individuals on best practices of orphan care to help make a lasting, positive impact on children’s lives.

Beracah, Zambia — Ruthy, a widow trying to support her 8 kids (1 with Down's Syndrome), was added to the Beracah program in 2009 to support the kids' education and provide job training. She was given a $30 loan for a kitchen garden to grow tomatoes, collard greens and Chinese cabbage. The loan was repaid and she earned another for $60 for chicken rearing. She used some of the money to buy inputs from a co-op for maize farming, as well as hiring someone to dig a well on her property for clean water.

Beracah, Zambia — At the close of 2011, the programs at Beracah were thriving. The microloan program invited 51 families to join the program with 48 loan recipients paying back their first loan on time.
